How to Replace an audi q7 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. 5. Tachometer
