Create Your Own Alfalfa Plants

Children are fascinated by watching seeds sprout. This is especially the case when seeds sprout quickly. Alfalfa is an easy-to-grow plant that can be sprouting within a week. For a chance to observe the seeds grow in the soil, sprinkle a few alfalfa seedlings on a sheet of paper towel that is damp.

You'll require:
a packet of alfalfa seeds (about 1.5g)

3 pieces of paper towel
A spray mister or small water container


How to Grow
Make sure to wet three pieces of paper towel, then place them on top of each other flat on a plate.
Remove the water from the plate. The paper towel must be moist, but the seeds should not be floating in water.
Spread the seeds evenly onto the towel.
To prevent the paper towel drying out, place it on a window and fill it with water. To wet seeds you can use a spray bottle or mister. You can also add water to the saucer using either a cup or a small jug.
Every day, check your seeds to see how they're developing.


Troubleshooting
Alfalfa seeds are very easy to cultivate and should begin to be able to germinate in just 2-6 days. Here are some issues to be aware of in the event that your seeds do not germinate within this time.

Too dry: Seeds require water in order to develop. Seeds of alfalfa absorb approximately 50% of their weight in water prior to they begin to germinate, making the appearance of swollen. Seeds that are too dry won't germinate. Make sure to add more water to your plate so the seeds are moist but not floating in water. You could also soak your seeds for a few hours. Just make sure to drain them and rinse them thoroughly prior to transferring them onto a paper towel.

Too wet:If the seeds are too wet their new roots and shoots may rot before they've had a chance to develop. Seeds can also turn mouldy. While it's perfectly acceptable to allow the paper towel and seeds to remain damp, they shouldn't be submerged in water. The excess water should be removed from the dish each time you mist or water the seeds.

Too cold or hot: Alfalfa thrives at 20-25°C. If you're growing your seeds during winter, keep them in a warm place inside. If you are growing your seeds in extremely hot temperatures, you might need to water the seeds more often as they will dry out quicker.
